چکیده

In a survey on uranium and 226Ra concentrations in water distributed by Finnish waterworks, 548 samples were analysed that covered drinking water networks servicing 84% of all consumers. Among all consumers, the mean and median uranium concentrations at the point of use were 0.58 and 0.15 g L–1. The mean uranium concentration in drinking water produced from groundwater was 0.88 g L–1, and when surface water was used in production the mean concentration was only 0.15 g L–1. 226Ra concentrations were generally below our detection limit of 0.01 Bq L–1. The annual effective doses to the public arising from these radionuclides were only a few microsieverts, and the 0.1mSv limit laid down in the EU Drinking Water Directive was not exceeded in any of the studied water distribution networks.

Natural radioactivity of drinking water in Finland.

The mean annual effective dose from natural radionuclides for users of drilled wells was estimated to be 0.41 mSv, for users of wells dug in the ground 0.05 mSv and for people using water from waterworks 0.02 mSv. The highest effective dose from drinking water was caused by 222Rn (Fig. 2) constituting 75% and 60% of the total effective dose caused by all natural radionuclides for drilled-well u...

Elements of natural radioactive decay series in Iranian drinking water and cigarettes.

The uranium (238U) decay series provides the most important isotopes of elements radium (226Ra), radon (222Rn), and polonium (210Po) with half-lives of about 1600 years, 3.8 days, and 140 days, respectively. Although the chemical structure of radium is very similar to calcium, the fact that it produces a radioactive gas (radon) complicates its handling in the laboratory and natural environment....

Radium-226-contaminated drinking water: hypothesis on an exposure pathway in a population with elevated childhood leukemia.

A recent epidemiological survey on childhood malignant disease in the region of Ellweiler, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany, revealed a significantly increased incidence of childhood leukemia, but observed incidences of lymphoma and solid tumors were normal. Established risk factors such as individual exposure to chemicals as well as hereditary genetic disorders were ruled out in interviews with the pa...

Radioactivity in some sachet drinking water samples produced in Nigeria

Background: Activity concentrations of 40K, 226Ra and 228Ra were measured in some sachet drinking water samples produced in Nigeria. Materials and Methods: The measurement was done by using high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector (Canberra Industries Inc.). The measured activity concentrations for 226Ra (U-series) and 228Ra (Thseries) were used with their ingested dose conversion factors ...
